the inspiration behind this exclusive print

In June 2015, the creative team was asked to create a fabric print inspired by a trend from the last 12 months during their weekly design challenge. One designer immediately honed in on the folk craft trend.

About two years prior, this designer was on a business trip in Japan. While there, she noticed Dutch-inspired, 70’s wallpaper-esque designs that were quite similar to what she was just now seeing emerge in the States through this folk craft trend.

Folk art offers a connection to generations past and in this recent iteration is defined by modern lines and construction details mixed with handmade prints. Geometric shapes, woodland animals and bold, clean colors tend to dominate the scene.

Drawing inspiration from the ahead-of-the-curve Japanese designs, she reinvented the folk craft trend. Not your typical woodland design, her creation features unexpected arctic animals that are somewhat woodland, like foxes and penguins, to give it a new spin. The result? The Kindred prints, which look at the folk craft trend through a foreign context, set in a different landscape, for patterns that feel both new yet familiar.
