Halloween is in the air here at aden + anais. Inspired by current and emerging trends, our design team worked their magic during a pumpkin painting session at our Brooklyn headquarters.

dark floral

Chic and mysterious, the dark floral trend took hold last winter on the catwalk and is making its way into every market segment from home goods to running shoes.

“I chose dark floral because I was drawn to the idea of an unexpected dark contrast on a bright orange pumpkin. I also love the trend because it’s beautiful yet moody—a fresh, edgier take on a typical floral.” —Jessica Terry Durdaller, Textile Designer

appalachian

Appalachian is a winter trend inspired by outdoor adventure and life in the mountains.

"The reason I chose Appalachian is because I love the cool colors and the different shades of blue that layer on top of each other.”  —Ace Suarez, Junior Graphic Designer

woodland adventure

Classic fairy tales, wild nature and reinterpreted folk art are at the heart of this trend.

“Being that it is the fall season with Halloween only days away, I thought this theme was a good choice. And WHO WHO doesn’t like an owl?”— Scott Schreibstein, Art Director

elemental

This look is all about the clash of nature, featuring epic landscapes that depict both hard and soft elements.

“I loved how this trend immediately evokes a strong emotion in the viewer. When I look at my pumpkin, I immediately think of ‘wonder.’ Plus, it allowed me to incorporate a hint of the Brooklyn spirit.”—Lizz Rindner, Senior Graphic Designer

Now it’s your turn! Here are a few pumpkin painting pointers from our creative pros:

•Use acrylic paint. It’s very easy to brush on, it dries quickly, and it has a great plastic-like finish that adheres well to a pumpkin. Plus, acrylics are water soluble, so clean up is easier if you’re little one is joining in on the fun. Our favorite brand is Liquitex Basics Acrylic Paint.

•Add details with a paint marker. This method allows you to be more precise with your marks. We’re fans of Uni Paint Markers and Sakura Pigma Micron Pens.

•Choose an inspiring visual to help guide your strokes. We used design trends, but you can google your kid’s favorite characters, use the design of a favorite blanket or even a page from your child’s go-to picture book.
