I first heard Finn’s story when our customer service team forwarded me an email from his mother, Kelly. When she was just 19 weeks pregnant with Finn, she learned that he had a life-threatening congenital heart defect. The doctors were certain he would not survive.
Familiar with our swaddles from her first child, she specifically ordered the Liam the Brave swaddle because it contained the word “brave” and intended to hold Finn in it during the moments between his first and last breaths. Miraculously, Finn defied the odds, and the Liam the Brave swaddle not only comforted him in his first moments, but also saw him through four hospital stays and two heart surgeries. At the time of Kelly’s initial email, Finn was three months old. She wrote:
“Every day, I wrap him in a different aden + anais swaddle. It’s perfect for heart babies because they are hot all the time, so it’s lightweight and he loves touching it with his fingers. It’s also very absorbent in case he gets sick. Best of all, it provides comfort because it reminds him of home. Now his Liam the Brave blanket has a completely different meaning. Even though he is struggling and fighting for his life right now, I thank god every day he is wrapped in it alive instead of me saying goodbye."
As a mother of four, her words rocked me to my core. I couldn’t begin to imagine what they were going through, and I felt privileged that our aden + anais swaddles could help in some small way during an unthinkable time. Later, our connection was deepened when Kelly learned that Liam the Brave was actually named after a little boy who fought cancer and that our Hayden’s Heart swaddle was inspired by a little boy battling Congenital Heart Disease.
I still keep in touch with Kelly, and Finn continues to be in and out of the hospital for surgeries. I once wrote to her, “He is so brave. What a fighter.” to which she responded, “Yes, we call him our little warrior.” And I knew immediately that we would one day name a collection “Warrior Finn.” When our creative team presented these designs, I knew it was the perfect fit.
